Emergency Department The emergency department is staffed with 21 board certified physicians, including 3 Pediatric Emergency Physicians. With a volume of 95,000 visits a year and a 19-20% admission rate, we have the opportunity to care for a diverse mix of acutely ill patients. We are exposed to every facet of emergency care with a total of 74 beds that includes a separate fast track, pediatric emergency department, and dedicated psychiatric area. The clinical pharmacist is responsible for ensuring safe and effective medication use for all patients admitted to the ED, including active participation with the attending physicians; collaboration with other pharmacists to assure timely medication availability; education of patients and their family members, education of physicians and nurses, and education of pharmacy trainees; participation on organizational, pharmacy department and nursing unit-based medication policy and continuous quality improvement committees. The ED pharmacist attends all trauma protocols, trauma responses, code strokes and code blues within the ED, assists with RSI and conscious sedation. They also serve as preceptor for pharmacy students, PGY1, & critical care pharmacy PGY2 residents.

The emergency department is staffed with medication reconciliation technicians that preform medication reconciliation duties for patients to be admitted. The clinical pharmacist may be asked to assist with medication discrepancies identified by the medication reconciliation technicians, however do not directly oversee this process.
